Russian for “whirlwind,” the SR-3 Vikhr (СР-3 Вихpь) is a small, fully automatic assault weapon that uses the 9x39mm subsonic round.

The Central Institute for Precision Machine Building, or TsNIITochMash, created it in the early 1990s. It is modeled around the AS Val silent assault rifle, although it is easier to conceal carry thanks to its newly designed folding stock and cocking handle and lack of an integrated suppressor. Following the SR-3’s deployment, the FSB created additional operating criteria in an effort to integrate the best features of the SR-3, AS Val, and VSS Vintorez, leading to the creation of a new variant known as SR-3M.

It has a modified handguard with a collapsible foregrip and a fast detachable silencer. Moreover, the iron sights have been moved from the suppressor to the upper front handguard, presumably for usage with the pistol unhinged from the suppressor. A larger 30-round magazine was created for this weapon, and the AS Val and the VSS Vintorez may also utilize it.
